My New Molcajete, And a Super Easy Guacamole Recipe Too!

I always wondered what the 1st recipe would be on my blog. Would it be a family classic? Would it be something NEW that I tried and loved? Would it be a recipe that I modified and then re-created? Well, in honor of September 16th being National Guacamole Day - everyday is "National Something" - and my desire to purchase a Molcajete for the longest time, I knew this would be the perfect way to start!

In case you have not heard of it before, a Molcajete is - and I quote - "is a stone tool, the traditional Mexican version of a mortar and pestle, similar to the South American baton, used for grinding various food products" {yes, I let Wikipedia help me on this one}. I have always been fascinated by the one at Crate & Barrel. Sure, you can purchase at a multitude of other stores and online retailers, and I am sure on Amazon too, but I just kept going back to this 8" classic from C&B. It's true what they say, the "grinding" process (ha) really does release the oils from veggies and spices, especially when making items like guacamole, salsa, and mole. And it made the process SUPER EASY! I have always found there is an art to making guacamole, and I have never been a fan of using a mix to help it along. I mean, come on, that is NOT authentic AND, half the time, there are so many added ingredients that it goes from being healthy to not so healthy. 

While I still feel like my recipe could be tweaked here and there, here are the BASICS that I used. Plus, it allows you to put your own spin on it, and what is Fit4You! :) Feel free to add more or less onion/jalapeño/lime, and more spices and seasonings as preferred. Just be mindful of how much you grind the avocado, especially if you want it on the chunkier/thicker side. Your initial thought may be to mash the avocado (in my case), then add the rest of the ingredients, and THEN do it again. If you can manage grinding ALL INGREDIENTS together, once in the Molcajete, this will provide a heartier consistency. 

But, like I said, season and grind however you choose! And, if there is a fun ingredient you think I should try next time, LET ME KNOW!

Serves: 4-6 


3 Ripe Avocados, flesh and pit removed

1 Medium Tomato, diced

1/2 Medium Red Onion, diced

1 Small Jalapeño, seeds removed and diced

1 Clove of Garlic, minced

Juice of 1 Lime

Salt & Pepper for Taste


Place all ingredients in Molcajete, and grind until the consistency of your liking is achieved. Season with salt & pepper!
